While many expect San Diego to be sunny all year round, it experiences a phenomenon many of you may know: June Gloom. It’s when the sky is often darkened by a marine stratus, which is caused by a “combination of cold water and higher pressure in the atmosphere”, according to this specialist at Scripps.
Here are things to do in San Diego on a cloudy day in June.
Savor a Hot Beverage
Much of the year, it’s so hot that nothing sounds better than an iced coffee or smoothie. On these colder, darker days, it’s the perfect opportunity to sip on a hot chai tea latte at Swell Coffee or a mocha at the Starbucks on Garnet…without sweating throughout.
Visit Moonshine Beach
The beach itself may be chillier than you’d like, so visit a different type of beach: Moonshine Beach. This new country bar, owned by the same folks as Moonshine Flats in downtown San Diego, has a great vibe and a lot of live music.
Warm Up with Homemade Curry
Like a hot coffee, a scorching curry doesn’t always sound great on a hot day. During cool weather, a spicy red curry or mild, savory yellow curry can be the perfect meal. World Curry on Garnet has a wide variety of curries and corresponding appetizers, such as:
- Garlic Naan
- Thai Coconut Veg Soup
- Tandoori Kabobs
- Phall Poppers (Chicken curry and cream cheese poppers. Whoa.)

Hit the Movies – Mainstream & Otherwise
For big-time films like Beauty and the Beast, visit local theaters like AMC Fashion Valley. For a variety of other films, ones others may not have heard of before, check out the Landmark Hillcrest. (And hey, this June 2017, a new film with Richard Gere is out.)
