5 Ways to Burn Off Thanksgiving Dinner Calories (#EarnIt)

Did you know the average American, according to the Calorie Control Council, eats about 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving?

That’s a lot of food but hey, it’s Thanksgiving. Instead of trying to cut back on the turkey and pumpkin pie (which, let’s be real, won’t happen – it’s so delicious and only once a year!) here are some ways to work off the calories ahead of time, during and after.

  1. Go for a run that morning.

Hit Mission Bay. Jog the boardwalk.

  2. Dance while you cook and prep.

Burn calories WHILE you’re preparing for Thanksgiving. Bump up your favorite tunes and get low while you get ready. It’s a sneaky and super fun way to work off calories. Dancing also decreases appetite, so you’re less likely to snag as many bites while cooking!

  3. Play charades after dinner.

Rather than just sipping more wine or playing a standard board game; suggest a game of charades. Moving and jumping around will help burn at least a few extra calories and help with digestion.

  4. Hit the trails the day after.

Hike at one of San Diego’s awesome areas to work off that turkey. Drive east and hike the short but steep Cowell’s Mountain. Head north and hike La Jolla’s Torrey Pines.

  5. Do one of your favorite beach activities, before or after.

It’s San Diego so, while the rest of the country is freezing, bundling up and cranking up the heat, celebrate the sunshine on the beach. Throw on a wet suit and go surfing. Play volleyball on the sand. Grab a frisbee or football to toss around. All of these are also great ways to spend time with friends and family, just as Thanksgiving time should!
